"What are you to me, grim pine-forested lands, Wilderness of the Carpathian Mountains
I may admire you, but I don't love you, And my thoughts don't wander in your valleys
Down on the plains, flat as the sea, There I feel at home, that's my world
My soul an eagle, freed from its prison When I see the never ending fields."

Hiking in Hajdúság

The Tours in Hajdúság programme series is designed to provide active recreation for all age groups. We mainly recommend cycling tours or hikes, and walks in towns, but for the territories beyond the Eastern Main Canal (Keleti-főcsatorna) we suggest a car.

Loess soil of the Hajdúság cycling tour (distance: 22 km, approx. 3 hours)

The tour starts from Hajdúböszörmény and heads south, where the participants can stop for a rest at the 'Farseer Hill', also known as Széchenyi Mound at the end of the concrete road. To reach the Tócó Valley follow the path across the fields, where you can leave (and lock) your bike to go for a small walk. The tour continues on minor roads to the Telek Mound and the Ruined tower of Zelemér demonstration points.

To finish the tour you can choose the train or follow the railway embankment to reach the capital of the Hajdúság.

A good thing in this tour is that it leads through low-traffic roads so it can be considered safe even for primary school groups.

Wetlands in the Hajdúság tour (distance: 28 km by bicycle; by train and on foot only 2-4 km)

Bicycle: Start from Hajdúböszörmény and head to north-east on Újfehértói street and then on Cégényi street (both are low-traffic and concrete roads) to reach the Partos Meadow demonstration area. Here one can spend many interesting hours resting or walking around a typical wet area of the region and examining the water wildlife with their family, a group or individually.

We suggest to return touching the settlement of Hajdúvid on the Nánási dirt road across the fields, if the weather is rainy, then it's better to go back on the same way one came.

Walk: The demonstration area is about a kilometre away from the railway station of Hajdúvid.

Bicycle grand tour (distance: 48 km, approx. 8 hours)

This tour is for cycling tourists being in good condition and prepared for safe travelling. The tour can be started from any hajdú towns because it touches all of them.

From Hajdúböszörmény head to Hajdúdorog on Dorogi street, where a small detour of a few hundred metres can be made to visit the demonstration area of Partos Meadow. After this we recommend to take a look at the garden of the Orthodox temple in Hajdúdorog, and go on to Hajdúnánás on the cycle path between the towns. At the protected ginkgo on the main square it is good to have a break before leaving the town towards Görbeháza and going on the right-side dike of the Eastern Main Canal. This is a dirt road. After 8 km we reach the the Long-Kajánszik demonstration point where we can meet the birds of the region. The Balmazújváros Bridge is 12 km far from that, and after crossing the bridge we reach Hajdúböszörmény on a concrete minor road.

Tour into the Town woods (distance: 14 km, approx. 5 hours)

The tour is recommended to be taken by walk, starting from the Zelemér railway station - but riding a bicycle is also possible, thus decreasing the time.

From the station head towards Bodaszőlő, follow the yellow signs for a few hundred metres and leave the track to north to reach the pheasant-raising establishment of the Nimród hunt, and the rest area within the Belső woods. After covering about 5 km we reach the Oakland with lily of the valley II demonstration area where a nature trail and a resting area can be found. The visit of the area is recommended with a trailleading booklet, though the big demonstration boards also supply basic information.

Following the gas pipes for 1.5 km the other demonstration area, Oakland with lily of the valley I comes next. Keep walking by the gas pipes to reach the skirts of the forest and it takes an hour through agricultural areas to make Hajdúböszörmény.

Birdwatching tour on the fields of Pród (2-3 hours of walk after reaching the locality by car)

The western corner of the subregion, past the Eastern Main Canal bears the signs of the Hortobágy. The meadows and the fish ponds offer diverse opportunites for examining the fauna, especially the birdlife on the plains.

For these tours the Tourinform offices will redirect the visitors to the Zöld Kör where we suggest a walking route depending on the season, weather and other conditions. In the area there are fields and saline lakes which are not part of the core areas of the Hortobágy National Park, so they can be visited on foot without restriction.

Crane migration (half-day excursion, we suggest off-road car to reach the locality)

We warmly recommend this tour to everyone, but only in October. The tour is seasonal, because the cranes are not brooding in our country, but they migrate in large numbers east from the Tisza river. The migration in autumn is very spectacular, the Hortobágy offers a great rallying and resting place for the craves, and in the daytime they move in big flocks to the agricultural areas of the Hajdúság to eat - this is when they can be inspected.

We suggest to get in touch with the Zöld Kör before the trip to know exactly where the birds can be found.

Walks in the town

We recommend the visit of Hajdúdorog and Hajdúböszörmény under the guidance of the brochures (available in many places) to meet the protected natural values - trees, avenues - during a comfortable walk.
